2008-04-25 Duluth | Gwinnett's new Solid Waste Plan will reduce carbon footprint

May 01, 2008 | 09:45 AM The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners adopted a new Solid Waste Management Plan that expands recycling opportunities and reduces the number of waste collection service providers doing business with the county.
The new plan, which will be implemented in 2009, designates one service provider for each of the eight residential unincorporated zones, and ensures the pick-up of all residential garbage. Gwinnett officials said this will reduce the number of collection trucks going through neighborhoods on a weekly basis.
In addition, Gwinnett wants to increase the amount of garbage that is recycled. Currently, less than 10 percent of residential waste in the county is recycled, reused or composted. County officials would like to see that number rise to 35 percent, which would outpace that of any other Georgia county.
Through the new plan, residents could recycle all types of paper, including cardboard, plastics 1-7, aluminum items, metal cans and glass.
